Instagram 3.0 – Photo Maps
Instagram 3.0 was designed to be useful for browsing, but also as a tool to better surface old content. Until now, you’d have to thumb through a friend’s pictures chronologically, whereas in 3.0, you can browse your own or someone else’s photos on a map, setting aside date and time.

So Facebook bought Instagram back in April and the two entities would remain separate. As Zuck put it:

Yesterday Instagram announced profile pages, which resemble the Facebook Timeline header quite a lot imo.
Today Faceboook released an update for their iOS app, adding photo filters.

The Technology behind Hyperlapse from Instagram
Hyperlapses are a special kind of time lapse where the camera is also moving. Capturing hyperlapses has traditionally been a laborious process that involves meticulous planning, a variety of camera mounts and professional video editing software. With Hyperlapse, our goal was to simplify this process. We landed on a single record button and a post-capture screen where you select the playback rate. To achieve fluid camera motion we incorporated a video stabilization algorithm called Cinema (which is already used in Video on Instagram) into Hyperlapse.

Trending at Instagram
We identified three main elements of a good trend:
- Popularity – the trend should be of interest to many people in our community.
- Novelty – the trend should be about something new. People were not posting about it before, or at least not with the same intensity.
- Timeliness – the trend should surface on Instagram while the real event is taking place.
In this post we discuss the algorithms we use and the system we built to identify trends, rank them and show them in the app.

The Jefferson Grid
The aforementioned Sad Topographies reminded me of The Jefferson Grid, an Instagram account curating a list of areal photos depicting a grid with cells the size of one square mile each, spread throughout the United States.
Looking from the window seat on a long plane flight, you might have noticed that large swaths of the United States are divided into a latticework of farms, towns and forests. The cells of that grid, each one mile to a side, are the visible result of a land planning system first proposed by Thomas Jefferson more than two centuries ago.
